VSG POWMSS Description

The Notch Portawrap IV is a lightweight, compact rope friction device engineered for controlled lowering of heavy wood sections during tree removal. Designed in the early 1990s by arborists Scott Prophett and Norm Hall and first manufactured exclusively by Notch, the Portawrap has become one of the most widely used lowering control devices in commercial tree care.

Before the Portawrap, ground workers controlled rope-lowered wood by wrapping the running end around a nearby tree, a technique that stripped bark and scored the host tree with friction. The Portawrap replaced that with a compact, portable device that presents predictable, unchanging friction to the rope regardless of the ground surface, allowing the groundsman to concentrate on the dynamics of the load above rather than managing an inconsistent friction source.

The stainless steel construction is rust-proof, designed to hold up to the heat, salt, and humidity that coastal and high-humidity commercial operations encounter in the field. The main tube is seamless, maximizing the strength-to-weight ratio for more stressful applications. All edges on the main tube and solid posts are chamfered for no sharp surfaces. A tree-protecting cap, a Scott Prophett special, prevents the gouging and bark disfiguration caused by the bottom contact point of competing devices. For lines up to 5/8 inch (16mm).
