There are a number of homeowner applications for lightweight water pumps. Gasoline powered pumps are useful for water moving in gardens, around the house, and for recreational uses. For more long-term use, electric submersible pumps can be used to continuously move water if necessary.
Uses for Pumps
Lightweight pumps are designed for relatively small pumping, draining, and filling jobs. They are portable, and useful for a variety of gardening, home care, and recreational uses. One use for lightweight pumps is irrigating a lawn or garden. If water pressure is too low to push water through an irrigation system, a lightweight pump is a practical solution.
For recreational use, lightweight pumps work well as water pumps for boats. They may be used for plumbing faucets and some appliances, or as bilge pumps to remove water from the boat. Around the house, both submersible and lightweight pumps can be used to remove and transfer water. For example, they could be kept on hand for emergency use, like draining a flooded basement, or used to drain a water garden before cleaning it.
Lightweight Models
The Honda WX10 Pump only weighs 13.4 pounds and has the capacity to pump 37 gallons per minute. It is ideal for garden use, since an adapter allows for garden hoses to be attached directly. This pump also includes a suction hose, clamps, and strainer.
The larger Honda WX15 Pump has a 72 gallons per minute capacity. Constructed from lightweight aluminum, this pump weighs 20 pounds and comes with hose clamps and a strainer. Both Honda pumps feature an easy-starting mini 4-stroke commercial grade engine, and use regular gasoline.
Echo’s WP-1000 Pump is powered by a commercial grade 2-stroke engine and it can pump up to 28 gallons per minute. It comes with an intake hose and filter. The durable construction, including a cast-iron volute, is designed to keep this pump running even under adverse conditions. It is also very lightweight at only 12.3 pounds.
Submersible Pumps
Submersible pumps can be used for many of the same tasks as lightweight pumps, but they are also designed for continuous use and are powered by electricity. Unlike lightweight pumps, they can be placed directly in the water. This makes them useful for draining basements, powering decorative fountains, and use in water gardens. Honda’s WSP33 Pump has a 40 gallons per minute capacity and can be plugged into a regular outlet, preferably a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet. This pump’s stainless steel casing will not rust or corrode, and the pump can be used constantly in temperatures up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. I will pump dirty water with particles up to 3/8-inch diameter without risk of damage.
