Buying new lawn equipment is a significant investment of your hard-earned money. And if you’re new to having a lawn to take care of, figuring out which equipment to purchase can be quite a challenge. The range of available options is huge and you’re not sure which brands and models will work best for you or which tools you’ll use most often.

Here at Richardson Saw, we carry a wide range of lawn equipment from top quality brands. Most of these brands offer homeowner models that will work for your yard, and we can help you narrow down your options to find just the right tools for your yard work.

Mower Options

Lawn size is probably the biggest factor in determining what type of lawnmower you buy. If you have a tiny lawn, consider a battery-powered walk-behind mower. For a slightly larger yard or one that’s harder to mow, a self-propelled gasoline powered walk-behind is a good choice. For lawns larger than 1/2 to 1 acre in size, you’ll probably want a riding mower.

Extra Trimming

The lawnmower isn’t going to reach every bit of grass. You’ll need another tool if you want to keep the edges of your lawn clear or cut down hard to reach vegetation. String-line trimmers are usually the go-to tool for homeowners who want to trim grass and weeds and do a little edging.

You can also invest in an edger if you want to maintain a very clean edge along pavement. And if you’ll be clearing tough weeds, a brushcutter is a good option (it’s often available as an attachment for the trimmer). Of you can get a multi-tool that does all three.

Spreaders and Sprayers

If you plan to apply fertilizer or use weed killers, spreaders and sprayers will make those jobs go more easily. A small hand-held sprayer like the Stihl Sprayer SG10 works perfectly for mixing up and applying weed killer around the house. And for spreading fertilizer or grass seed, a wheeled spreader makes the job quick and simple.

Cutting Tools

Quite a few houses have hedges in the landscape that need regular trimming. For a few small hedges, you can use hand-held shears from a brand like Corona. But if you have lots of hedges to maintain, you’ll want a powered trimmer. For more info, check out our Beginner’s Guide To Hedge Trimmers.

Not everyone will need a chainsaw, but if you want one for light pruning and firewood cutting top brands like Stihl and Echo offer homeowner models. We also carry more powerful chainsaws if you plan to do more heavy-duty wood cutting.

Yard Clean-Up

Another tool you might want is a leaf blower and/or shredder/vacuum (they’re available separately or combined in the same tool). Blowers let you move leaves and light-weight yard debris into piles, disperse grass clippings over a lawn, or clear off paved areas. With the shredder/vac option, you’ll also be able to suck up the collected leaves and shred them for composting or disposal.
