When you work in the lawn and landscape industry, the tools you’re using can make your job a whole lot easier or a whole lot harder. You need reliable tools that can work all day, just like you do.
For landscapers, keeping a variety of tools on hand is essential. Hedge trimmers, string trimmers, edgers, and bed redefiners are a few of the tools you’ll probably want to keep in your equipment fleet. Even if you mostly do lawn care, you’ll still need some hand tools in addition to the lawnmower. Trimmer and edger are the big two, but a blower can also be useful for cleaning up the lawn.
One way to keep all these tools on hand is by purchasing a multi-tool system. Richardson Saw and Lawnmower stocks a couple of multi-tool systems, including the Echo PAS system and STIHL’s KombiSystem. Both are excellent choices for professional yard work, and here’s why.
Why Multi-Tools?
Choosing a multi-tool system is a great way to decrease maintenance and save money and space, all while keeping several different kinds of tools on hand. Rather than purchasing several tools, you can simply purchase one powerhead and then add attachments based on your needs. This makes the tools easy to store and transport. It also makes maintenance easier since you only need to clean and maintain one powerhead.
As a lawn care professional, multi-tools provide a way for you to save space on the equipment trailer and cut down on maintenance needs. The only downside is that only one person can use the tool at a time. If only one person is working on a property that’s fine. But if you have a whole crew there, it might make sense to have separate dedicated tools so they can be used at the same time.
Multi-tools can also be good backup tools. For example, you might use a trimmer and edger most frequently and occasionally need a hedge trimmer or blower. You could have a dedicated trimmer and edger, then keep a multi-tool with trimmer, edger, hedge trimmer, and blower attachments. The multi-tool will act as a backup for your most-used tools and give you a space-saving way to carry a hedge trimmer and blower as well.
Echo Pro Attachment Series
Echo’s Pro Attachment Series (PAS) tools offer four different power heads for residential and commercial use. The DPAS-2600SB is Echo’s battery-powered commercial powerhead. The PAS-2620 is their gasoline-powered commercial powerhead. If you get the battery powerhead, quiet operation and zero emissions make it a perfect choice for working in town. Just be sure to pick up an extra battery or two as well so you can keep working without downtime to recharge.
The PAS system is designed to be versatile. And if you’re just starting out, it can grow with your business—buy the tools you need now, then get additional attachments later. The 16 different attachments swap out easily and quickly, saving you time on a job site. All of the attachments are compatible with the commercial powerheads. A few (like the bed redefiner) will not work with the homeowner powerheads.
STIHL KombiSystem
Stihl offers both homeowner and professional KombiTool systems. There is one battery-powerhead available, and four different commercial gasoline-powered KombiMotors. STIHL offers 14 attachments, and 13 of them will work with all the commercial powerheads and the battery powerhead. However, the curved-shaft trimmer attachment is only available for the most powerful, gasoline-powered commercial engine.
You can think of the KombiSystem as a “Swiss Army Knife” for lawn equipment. Available attachments include a mini cultivator, edgers, string-line trimmers, hedge trimmers, a pole pruner, and a blower. There are also clean-up tools in the Kombi system—a PowerSweep attachment and a bristle brush attachment—so they are useful for more than just yard work. Like the PAS system, you can easily swap between attachments and purchase new attachments as needed.
STIHL Yard Boss
In addition to the Kombi tools, STIHL also offers the YardBoss multisystem. This tool is focused on gardening and lawn transformation. Attachments include multiple cultivator blades, a dethatcher, and cleaning brushes. There is also a string-line trimmer attachment available, which lets you transform the Yard Boss into a walk-behind wheeled trimmer.
