For many years, battery powered equipment was not practical for many homeowners or lawn care professionals because the equipment couldn’t provide enough power and didn’t hold charges well. As technology improves, however, you get more powerful equipment with longer run times. Battery-powered equipment also has the advantage of being lightweight and producing zero emissions.
Stihl’s expanding line of battery-powered KombiSystem tools provides high-power performance and long run times with no gradual drop in power while you’re working. The equipment will run at full power right up until the battery runs out. At that point, just switch batteries or charge the battery for 30 minutes or more (depending on your charger and battery) and you’re ready to get back to work.
Lithium-Ion Perks
Like other lithium-ion batteries, the ones from Stihl have high energy density and are low maintenance. They’re also fast-charging and interchangeable, so you can power multiple types of equipment with the same battery.
Stihl currently offers five different batteries. All can be charged hundreds of times before you start noticing a loss in capacity. Charge Stihl batteries 500 times and they still work at 80% capacity. Some of these batteries are completely interchangeable for all products in the Stihl battery KombiSystem line of products. Others are compatible with most, but not all, the KombiSystem products.
Battery Options
Stihl’s AP 100, AP 180 and AP 300 batteries work with every product in the KombiSystem line. The AP 100 is light-weight at only 1.8 pounds and works best with the less-powerful equipment. It can power the hedge trimmers for an hour, but only powers the chainsaws, blowers, and professional trimmers for 6 to 20 minutes depending on the equipment. For longer run times, you’ll need the AP 180 or the AP 300. The AP 180 will power equipment for 15 to 140 minutes, and the AP 300 for 18 to 180 minutes.
If you want to use battery-powered equipment commercially, consider the AR 900 Backpack Battery. This battery weighs about 15 pounds, and the weight is comfortably distributed across your back with padded shoulder straps. It will power equipment for 95 to 800 minutes, and is compatible with all Stihl’s battery-powered products except the lawn mowers.
