Professional walk-behind mowers are powerful, sturdy pieces of lawn equipment useful for a variety of tasks. They give you more control than zero-turn mowers when you’re trying to mow in tight spaces. Walk-behinds are also safer on hills than riding mowers. Using a walk-behind, you can be more flexible when cutting a lawn since they make it easy to navigate around obstacles or to stop mowing and move something out of the way. Plus they have a smaller footprint than riding mowers and don’t take up as much room on an equipment trailer. They’re also great for those of us who don’t like to spend all our mowing time sitting down.
The powerful commercial walk-behind mowers are designed to stand up to the demands of professional lawn care work. They can also be a good choice for homeowners who want a more rugged lawnmower. Professional walk-behinds come in a range of sizes. The smaller ones are about the same size as homeowner models and are useful for trim work and smaller yards. The larger mid-size, zero-turn walk-behinds will work for mowing large lawns. Some even have cutting decks the same size as comparable riding mowers.
When you’re looking to purchase a professional walk-behind mower, there are several brands and models that you can choose from. Today, we’re going to look at the mowers offered by three brands that we carry here at Richardson Saw & Lawnmower. Toro, eXmark, and Scag are among the most trusted brands out there and we’re proud to stand by the quality of their mowers.
Toro’s Heavy Duty Mowers
When you’re looking for a new walk-behind mower, Toro is one of the best brands to consider. It’s one of the highest-rated lawnmower brands in the lawn care industry. As just one example, last year Consumer Reports rated the Toro Recycler SmartStow 21329 as one of their top two pics for gas-powered push mowers.
Toro’s commercial walk-behind mowers come with either 21-inch or 30-inch cutting decks. The 21-inch Heavy Duty models are 3-speed, self-propelled mowers with decks are designed for premium mulching performance. The Turf Master models reduce cutting time with their larger, 30-inch cutting deck. Toro designed both of these mower series for durability with sturdy frames, heavy-duty steel decks, and other commercial-grade components.
Toro also offers mid-size walk-behinds with 32-inch, 36-inch, 48-inch, 54-inch, or 60-inch cutting decks. These sturdy, reliable mowers give you all the advantages of a walk-behind mower along with the wider cutting decks of a zero-turn riding mower so you can cut lawn more quickly.

eXmark’s Commercial Models
The eXmark commercial 21-inch and 30-inch mowers are small enough to use for trim work, yet powerful enough to handle professional lawn care. The 21-inch models have a 5-inch deep die-cast aluminum deck that is 1/4-inch thick. The 30-inch ones feature a 4.6-inch deep Stamped Steel deck with welded reinforcement. The deep decks provide eXmark’s signature high-quality mulching cut.
These commercial eXmark mowers have high-powered engines. Built-in guards protect the engines from damage and debris so the mowers will last for many years. You’ll also get the option of cutting with a bag or converting the mower for side discharge.
For mid-size walk-behinds, you can choose from eXmark’s Metro, Viking, or Turf Tracer series. The Metro is a fixed-deck, gear drive mower with 32-inch to 48-inch fixed cutting decks. Deck widths on the Viking mower are either 36-inch or to 48-inch, and these mowers feature Hydro Quick Track Adjustment to allow for easy and fast adjustments without tools. Turf Tracer mowers are the largest walk-behinds eXmark offers, with decks ranging from 36-inches to 60-inches. These are sturdy, full-featured mowers with rugged engines that can handle the toughest of lawn cutting jobs.

Scag’s Walk-Behind Mowers
Scag is one of the most respected lawnmower manufacturers in the world and they offer an outstanding line of commercial walk-behinds. Their belt-drive walk-behind mowers are powered by Kawasaki air-cooled engines. The twin power belts are designed to maximize cutting power under all weather conditions. Design is simple and efficient, so it’s easy even for new operators to use Scag mowers. These mowers have a five-speed transmission, and the mowers can travel at speeds between 2 and 6 miles per hour. Four cutting deck sizes are available: 32-inch, 36-inch, 48-inch, and 56-inch.
Scag’s hydro-drive mowers are zero-turn walk-behinds with a heavy-gauge frame designed for durability and rugged use. Independent power is supplied to each wheel with dual hydraulic pumps and cast-iron wheel motors. This, coupled with counter-rotation turning, makes it easy to maneuver around trees and landscape beds while minimizing marks on the lawn. The fixed or floating cutting decks (depending on the model) range in size from 36-inches to 61-inches.
