When mowing a lawn, there are always places you can’t quite reach with your lawn mower. The edges of patios, driveways, flowerbeds, decks, and walkways are hard to keep neatly trimmed using only a lawn mower. To maintain the edges around these areas, some specific tools are required.

Maintaining an edge can be done with hand tools, such as a shovel or wheel edger, but for a  quicker, more professional look you will want to use lawn edging machines. A gas or electric edger will significantly reduce the amount of time it takes to edge your lawn and is a good choice when you have a limited amount of time to devote to lawn care tasks or if your lawn is not very small.

There are a variety of edgers available for both home and professional use. The most powerful of these are gas edgers. They feature a long shaft with two handles and an engine one end, and a cutting blade and guide wheel at the other.

Edgers For The Home

Echo PE-225 – this gas powered edger is a good choice for home use, but can also be considered professional quality. It features a large handle for easy gripping, easy adjustment to cutting depth, and a debris flap to minimize kickback. It weighs only 13.1 pounds.

Stihl FC 56 C-E – one of the most fuel efficient gas edgers available for home use. It features Stihl’s Easy2Start technology and a semi-automatic choke for easy starting. This edger will provide a clean, professional look for home owners, and has a low-emission engine with reduced noise levels.

Edgers For Professional Lawn Care

Stihl FC Professional Edgers – all Stihil professional edgers feature efficient, low-emission engines. All four FC Pro edgers feature a skid plate and adjustable depth wheel. The FC 70 and FC 90 are curved-shaft edgers that weigh about 13.5 pounds. The FC 95 and FC 110 both feature straight shafts and weigh 15.4 pounds.

Shindaiwa LE242 and LE254 – both of these edgers feature powerful engines, steel skid plates, open face shields, and height adjustable guide wheels. The LE254 is considered commercial grade, and is slightly heavier and more powerful than the LE242.

RedMax HEZ2650F – this commercial edger features a Strato-Charged engine with ultra-low emissions. Its high-torque cutting capability  and high power output helps prevent stalling, making it a good choice for professional lawn care. The clog-resistant aluminum guard also makes it more durable than competing models with plastic guards.
