As the weather warms up and the soil thaws in the spring, you’ll probably start thinking about getting into your garden. Once the soil is dry enough to crumble and there aren’t frost crystals in it, you can start tilling and getting ready for spring planting.
That means you’re going to need a reliable tiller to break up the soil. If you’ve been renting or borrowing tillers and are ready to buy one, or if it’s time to replace an old tiller, then you can’t go wrong with Honda.
Honda offers three types of reliable tillers designed to fit your exact needs. Have a small garden? A mini-tiller/cultivator is compact and maneuverable. Need something with a little more power? Try one of the mid-tine models. Plan on working in a large garden? The rear-tine tiller makes it easy to till large gardens and to work for longer periods of time.
Why Pick a Honda Tiller?
There are a lot of tillers on the market, so you might be wondering why we’re only focusing on Honda. Other than cultivator attachments for STIHL and Echo’s multitool systems, here at Richardson Saw the only tillers we carry are made by Honda.
Honda’s tillers are reliable and deliver top-quality performance, whether you’re a home gardener or a professional landscaper. Specially designed tilling tines and powerful Honda GX series commercial-grade engines mean Honda tillers can churn through just about anything. Commercial-grade transmissions, air filters, and engine guards ensure long-lasting performance.
These tillers are also easy to use. Intuitive controls, low vibration levels, and well-balanced design make it more comfortable to use these tillers than many other models. Plus, transport wheels make the tillers easy to move around.
Mini Tiller
The smallest Honda tiller features an easy-starting 4-stroke engine. A guard covers the front, back, and top of the engine to protect it from accidental bumps. This guard also provides a convenient handle for moving the tiller. It also makes it easy to tie the tiller down for transport if you need to move it between properties.
The FG110 mini-tiller/cultivator only weighs 29 pounds and has a 9-inch tilling width, which makes it very easy to carry and maneuver. You can transport it between gardens and till in narrow spaces more easily than with a larger tiller. If you have trouble working with heavier lawn equipment, have a small garden, or need to till in confined spaces, then this tiller will work well for you.
Mid-Tine Tillers
Honda offers two mid-tine tillers. Both tillers feature a retractable transport wheel and depth bar, which lets you control how deep the tiller works the soil and how fast you till. The F220 also makes it easy to adjust the tilling width, making it a very versatile tiller. There’s a removable tine on each side so you can use the tiller either at 21-inches or 12-inches wide. This tiller has a folding handle, which makes it easy to store.
The FC600 has a 26-inch tilling width so you can cover more ground at once. The tines measure 14 inches in diameter (2 inches more than the F220) so you can work the soil more deeply. Both mid-tine tillers are good choices for small to mid-size gardens.
Rear-Tine Tillers
Honda’s most powerful tiller features a 20-inch tilling width and 12-inch tine diameter. This tiller is self-propelled with 3 forward speeds and 1 reverse. The rear tines are enclosed for safety and there’s also a debris shield to protect you from flying dirt. Side-tine shields let you get closer to plants and structures like fences without worrying about tearing stems off or getting the tines stuck.
You can operate the FRC800 from behind or while walking on either side. This means you can walk beside the tiller on untilled ground so you’re not stepping on and compacting freshly tilled soil. This loop-handle feature also makes the tiller easier to turn at the end of rows. This rear-tine tiller is ideal for large gardens and/or breaking new ground. Since it is self-propelled, unlike the mid-tine tillers, you can work with this tiller for longer without tiring yourself out.
Which One Is Best for You?
If you have a small garden, want to weed between rows, or work in tight spaces like raised beds, then the mini-tiller/cultivator would be a good choice for you. It’s also easy to transport, making it a convenient option to carry on an equipment trailer.
The F220 mid-tine tiller works well if you want a tiller that can cover more ground than a mini-tiller, but you also want the option to till in narrow places. It’s like having a mini cultivator and a mid-tine tiller all in one.
For larger gardens, the FC600 mid-tine tiller helps you cover more ground at once and gives you the option to work soil deeper. You can use this tiller to work soil in the spring and fall. If you want a tiller to help with weeding or get into tight spaces, you can also get a mini-tiller.
The larger rear-tine tiller is powerful enough to easily break up soil for a brand-new garden. Since it’s self-propelled, it also makes it easier to till a large garden without getting tired. These tillers are ideal for rental equipment fleets, homeowners with large gardens, and landscape professionals putting in new garden beds.
